Cedar Rapids police officers are investigating a homicide. Officers say they responded to a report of an injured man outside a building near 15th Street and 12th Avenue Southeast last night. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. Officials have not said how he died. The victim’s name has not been released yet.
Dubuque Police are releasing crime statistics from 2023. Among the most notable trends–Crimes against people were slightly up, with much of that increase coming with aggravated assaults, which reached their highest number since at least 2015, and a 42 percent increase year over year. Meanwhile, sexual assaults have fallen for the 4th year in a row, and robbery crimes are at their lowest number in at least 9 years.
An Iowa Falls police officer was placed on leave after leaving marijuana in a classroom. The incident happened during a K-9 training exercise at Riverbend Middle School over the weekend. Police say a teacher discovered a bag of “training weed” that was left in a cabinet. Officer Blake Munro was disciplined but is back on duty. The department enacted new protocols for future training exercises.
Taboo Night Club is facing two lawsuits after the shooting at that Cedar Rapids nightclub that killed three people in April of 2022. Among those killed was Marvin Cox. His family–and Richard Nicksion, who was injured–are suing Timothy Rush, one of the two gunmen, and the owners of the night club. Nicksion is seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Cox’s family is suing for lost wages, funeral expenses, and damages. The gunman, Timothy Rush, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a plea deal after originally being charged with two counts of second degree murder.
Dubuque is looking for community feedback on conceptual plans for three parks set to be constructed this year. They’re encouraging people to review the concepts and give input on the layouts, features and equipment for the Eagle Valley, English Ridge and Westbrook neighborhood parks. The park plans and an online survey are available on the city’s website until noon Friday.
