CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A male suspect is dead after a police pursuit that involved an exchange of gunfire in Cedar Rapids, officers confirmed Monday. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said the incident started just before 6:30 a.m. when police responded to a report of a drive-by shooting in the 400 block of Longwood Drive NE. After officers found the suspect vehicle, a chase began. Police said two White males were inside the vehicle at the time of the chase. The police pursuit went down 1st Avenue near 12th Street East when officers said the driver pointed a gun out of the window and fired at officers. The passenger reportedly got out of the vehicle at one point and was taken into custody. The chase continued to Mount Vernon Road SE and 34th Street SE, where the suspect allegedly fired more shots at officers. The suspect’s vehicle reportedly went off the road in the 5600 block of Mount Vernon Road SE. Officers said that as they gave the suspect verbal commands, but he fired his weapon again from inside the vehicle. That’s when five officers fired their guns at the suspect. They later found the suspect dead at the scene. None of the officers involved in the incident were hurt. The Iowa DCI is investigating the incident. The name of the suspect who was shot and killed has not been released at this time. Police say they shot at the suspect after the suspect fired a gun from inside the vehicle. Officers have not confirmed how the suspect died.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The new year means new laws are going into effect as of Monday. One of the biggest is now being blocked in court. The new education law banning some school library books and forbidding teachers from raising LGBTQ issues was to take effect Monday, but on Friday, a federal judge temporarily blocked it. Hundreds of books have already been taken off shelves by many school districts. Starting today, taxpayers are required to use the same filing status as they use for federal individual income tax purposes. And the state’s so-called “Uniform Limited Liability Company Act” was basically rewritten, impacting business organizations, including limited liability companies.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – A small, private aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Davenport field Sunday evening. According to the Davenport Police Department, the aircraft made the emergency landing in a field near the 5900 block of Tremont Avenue around 4:40 p.m. The plane was approaching the Davenport Municipal Airport for landing when the pilot reported mechanical problems and made the emergency landing. Two individuals were on board, but there were no apparent injuries. Both passengers declined treatment.
VAN METER, Iowa —(KCCI) – Casey’s is not a drive-thru. At least, it’s not supposed to be one. Police in Van Meter took a driver into custody Monday morning after the driver took their vehicle right into Casey’s. The Casey’s is closed until inspectors can confirm the building is safe. Police haven’t confirmed what charges the driver will face. They say no customers were inside when it happened. No one was hurt.
