Dairy calves are an investment in the long-term success of an operation. That’s why the dairy industry is so invested in researching genetics and nutrition. Olivia Genther-Schroeder, a dairy feed research scientist with Purina Animal Nutrition, says gut health is an area of animal health that is often overlooked by dairy producers.
Genther-Schroeder says that compared to older animals, the bodies and gut of calves can be molded and shaped much easier. She says that producers need to provide calves with the building blocks for success, early in their lifespan.
Genther-Schroeder adds that consistency is the key when building up the gut health of a calf.
