WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has shared additional information on the person Waterloo Police shot last week. The officer-involved shooting happened after officers pulled over a vehicle suspected in a shots-fired call on the evening of September 16. Authorities identified the man as 22-year-old Deandrew Spates, of Waterloo, who has since been released from the hospital. According to a criminal complaint from Waterloo Police, Spates was the front-seat passenger in the vehicle officers pulled over. When officers tried to pat down Spates, he ran away. The complaint continues that Spates threw a handgun while officers chased behind him. Officers said that handgun contained a bullet in the chamber and multiple bullets in the 50-round magazine. Waterloo Police charged Spates with one count of Dominion/Control of Firearm/Offensive Weapon by Felon, and one count of Interference with Official Acts – Dangerous Weapon. According to Waterloo Police, Spates has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from owning guns. He is being held at the Black Hawk County Jail. Iowa DCI continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
JONES COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Monticello man was sentenced Monday in Jones County court for his participation in distributing methamphetamine in the area. James Robert Smith, 39, was sentenced 15 years in prison for a charge of drug tax stamp violation as an habitual offender. He must serve three years before he is considered for parole. This is the latest arrest in a meth ring investigation that began in October of 2023. The Monticello Police Department investigated Smith in June of 2025 after he was found passed out in his vehicle at a Casey’s gas station. When officers searched his vehicle, a criminal complaint says they found nearly 14 grams of meth, as well as a scale and other drug paraphernalia. Investigators with the Anamosa Police were able to identify Smith as a dealer through a confidential source, who said suspects purchased from a man nicknamed “Biggie” or “Bigs” at the Blue Inn in Monticello. Investigators said they also had messages on a phone from a previous suspect that showed Smith was communicating about drug deals. In addition to the drug tax stamp charge, Smith also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and an OWI. He will serve those sentences consecutively with the other charge.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa City Police Department has arrested a man accused of stealing $3,500 in electronics from the city’s Senior Center. The police’s criminal complaint says 22-year-old Darrell Washington, of Iowa City, was likely committing thefts while he was employed at the center. Police say he used a keycard to get into the South Linn Street building on August 31 outside of work hours, spent over 45 minutes in the facility and took a variety of electronics. Investigators searched his Iowa City home and found evidence of the theft. Investigators also say they found a photo of one of the stolen items at the time of the theft. Washington was arrested on Tuesday. He is charged with second-degree theft and third-degree burglary, both Class D felonies.
LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – One person was hurt after a e-bike/vehicle collision in Linn County on Tuesday. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were called at 8:27 p.m. to Springville Road near Bolton Manor Road. They arrived to discover a man who was riding an e-bike northbound when he was hit by a vehicle. The person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
