The Cedar Rapids City council unanimously passed a resolution to establish a weapon screening and security policy for its meetings. It would be similar to airport screenings. An officer would also be monitoring people. The change would come after a series of outbursts against city council members.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says a suspect went to the hospital for injuries after an officer-involved shooting in Waterloo. Police say it happened just after 9:30 Wednesday night in the 800 block of Sycamore Street. Officers attempted to pull over a vehicle suspected in a shots fired call. Police say at some point the shooting happened. No officers were hurt. The DCI will not say why the officer fired their weapon or if the suspect fired a weapon.
The Iowa Board of Regents approved the establishment of a new center at the University of Northern Iowa named the Chuck and Barbara Grassley Center. It will be dedicated to civic education, public engagement, and leadership development. It will build on the already existing collection of Senator Grassley’s papers housed at UNI.
A central Iowa woman is charged with first degree murder, accused of killing her newborn and putting the baby in a trash can. Officers found the baby in a trash bag Tuesday at a daycare in Perry. According to court documents, Stephanie Ubaldo told law enforcement officers she delivered the baby in the daycare’s bathroom while working there. She also told them she intentionally hurt the baby to stop her from crying, and that she knew she was pregnant and didn’t tell anyone. Iowa has a “Safe Haven Law” that allows parents to surrender an infant up to 90 days old without fear of prosecution. Parents can bring the baby to places like hospitals or fire stations. Or they can leave the child in what’s called a “Safe Haven Baby” box.
Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags flown at half-staff from sunrise today until sunset Sunday to honor former president of the Iowa and American Soybean Associations, Ray Gaesser, who died September 5, 2026, after a farm accident.
