CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids Police have identified the person killed in an e-bike crash last week. Police responded to an e-bike crash involving another vehicle on Thursday, August 13 at the intersection of Center Point Road NE and Highway 100. The e-bike victim has been identified as 54-year-old Thedrick J Daniels II of Cedar Rapids. Witnesses at the scene say they saw Daniels hit a vehicle on the driver side. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI/KCRG) – Eight high schools in Iowa have canceled their varsity football seasons due to low participation and safety concerns. The Iowa High School Athletic Association says this includes Davis County in Class 2A, Central Decatur and New London in Class A, and Exira-EHK, Lone Tree, Mormon Trail, Rockford and Siouxland Christian. Rockford and Lone Tree canceled their 2025 seasons before a game was played, and Siouxland Christian forfeited their season after one game was played. The regular 2026 season begins on Thursday, August 27. Des Moines East and Des Moines North will face off, as well as Dubuque Hempstead and Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
STUART, Iowa (KCRG) – An Iowa man has now been charged after a shooting Tuesday that killed one woman and injured a state trooper. Austin Reed, 46, from Stuart is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder of a peace officer. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) says dispatch received a report of a shooting around 3:35 p.m. in the 200 block of SW 6th Street, about 40 miles west of Des Moines. According to a criminal complaint, a witness told police that Reed walked up behind them and shot the victim, who died at the scene. She was later identified as 42-year-old Toni Elena-Ann Salazar. Reed allegedly pointed the gun at the witness, but the gun malfunctioned. Iowa DCI says Iowa State trooper Chase Carruthers was one of the first on scene and was shot by Reed. Trooper Carruthers was taken to a Des Moines area hospital. Iowa DCI says he is stable but still receiving medical care. He has been with the Department of Public Safety since December of 2025, Iowa DCI says. Iowa DCI alongside Stuart Police are investigating the case.

This is the fifth year in which West High has topped the charts, claiming the #1 spot. West High also ranks #455 nationally. West High has a graduation rate of 95% and an overall college readiness score of 55.9. Other top schools in eastern Iowa include Decorah High School at #2, Liberty High School at #4, and Cedar Falls High School at #9.
