U.S. farmers and ranchers are paying close attention to the negotiations on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. Virginia Houston, the senior director of congressional affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation, highlights the vital roles Mexico and Canada have played in the success of U.S farmers and ranchers as important export destinations for U.S. products.
According to Houston, none of these three countries have agreed to renew the agreement by July 1st, thereby automatically launching the annual review process.
Houston says it’s hard to put a timeline on how long the negotiations could last or whether there will be a new agreement soon, since all three countries have yet to be brought together for trilateral negotiations.
Uncertainty surrounds the renewal of the USMCA trade agreement, with all three parties yet to reach a common agreement.
