A man driving nearly 90 miles per hour through Cedar Rapids received his prison sentence for crashing into an SUV that a pregnant woman was driving–ending her pregnancy. Trenton Eiben was behind the wheel on First Avenue near Coe College when he crashed into an SUV. That SUV’s driver lost her pregnancy, which was 18 weeks along. She spoke at the hearing about the loss of her unborn son. A judge accepted Eiben’s plea deal which includes a 25-year prison sentence and restitution to the victim.
Dyersville will have a summer collegiate baseball team in 2027, and now that team has its name. The “Dyersville Dreamers” will compete in the Northwoods League next summer. They’ll play at the new stadium against other teams in the Midwest. The Dyersville Dreamers” take the field on Memorial Day 2027.
Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation says vandals caused damage to two city parks. Men’s bathrooms were damaged at Riverside Park in the Czech Village and at the Parkview Pavilion in Jones Park. Both bathrooms are closed until further notice for repairs.
The Iowa National Guard says about 120 of its soldiers will head to Washington, D.C.to support America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and Freedom 250 events for the rest of the year. America 250 events include a JazzFest and a block party at the Smithsonian Museum. Freedom 250 events include the Patriot Games and the Great American State Fair. The soldiers will also work alongside federal groups like the D.C. National Guard, Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Marshals Service. The guard says the goal is to ensure the safety and security of visitors and residents in Washington. A send-off is set for Friday morning at the Des Moines Airport.
The Iowa State Fair is about a month away, and organizers announced more than 80 new foods people can buy this year from nearly 200 food stands. Among the tasty items… PB&J corn dog, parmesan ice cream, a Cinnamon Toast Crunch mozzarella cheese dog and deep-fried apple pie. The fair is set for August 13-23 in Des Moines.
