Tax season can be a stressful time of year, and that is especially true for farm country. As the number of tax preparers who are familiar with the unique complexities of agricultural income declines, a new program from Iowa State University is being developed to offer free ag-tax training to tax-prep professionals across the country and bring those numbers back up. Kristine Tidgren, director of Iowa State’s Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation (CALT), said they are spending the next year working on an educational program to increase the number of tax professionals who are able to help farmers with their tax returns.
Many ag tax professionals are reaching retirement age, and there aren’t enough other tax professionals with the necessary agricultural knowledge to replace them and take care of their rural clients.
Tidgren said the program they are working on focuses on educating people who already know how to file tax returns.
Tidgren added that ISU’s CALT already has many educational programs on their website.
