The Secure Pork Supply Plan, or SPS, allows producers to voluntarily create an enhanced biosecurity and continuity plan, tailored to their operation. Dr. Meredith Peterson, director of swine health with the National Pork Board, says the recently reviewed SPS provides producers with the tools needed to improve biosecurity, monitor herd health, and request movement permits in the event of a foreign animal disease.

Dr. Peterson says the updates are being driven by new research on risk factors associated with foreign animal diseases, along with strong input from the industry, like what’s working well, where improvements are needed, and where the industry may need to rethink its approach.

Dr. Peterson said it’s beneficial for producers to have everything in one place, from biosecurity protocols to movement records, making it easier to manage and respond when needed.
