Iowa farmers rely on strong export markets, and two of the most important remain Canada and Mexico. But a planned trade mission to Mexico has been postponed.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says safety concerns tied to cartel activity and travel disruptions led to the decision.

Naig says the delay is disappointing, especially given the importance of Mexico as a market for Iowa agriculture.

He says the timing is also significant as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement faces a scheduled review, making engagement with key partners even more critical.

Naig says while trade relationships often include disagreements, the USMCA provides a structure to resolve those issues.

He points to past tensions, including Mexico’s attempt to restrict GMO corn imports, as an example of why having a formal agreement in place is essential.

Despite the postponed trip, Naig says Mexico remains a top priority, and efforts are underway to reschedule the mission. He says maintaining strong relationships with both Mexico and Canada will be key to supporting demand for Iowa products, including corn, soybeans, pork, and DDGs.
