OELWEIN, Iowa (KCRG) – An Oelwein woman has been granted parole after being sentenced to 30 years in prison after a 2020 crash that killed her 9-year-old son and injured her other son, according to court documents. 38-year-old Robryn Reaves pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and serious injury by vehicle in December 2022. Court documents show she has been out of prison on parole as of February 10, on work release out of Buchanan County. According to prosecutors, the crash occurred just after midnight on July 19, 2020, when Reaves was driving northbound on County Road V62 near the intersection with Benson Avenue in rural Buchanan County. Her vehicle went into the ditch and hit a field drive embankment, then vaulted the field drive and came to rest on the north side of the embankment. Airbag data showed Reaves was speeding well over the posted speed limit and never hit the brakes, officials said. Law enforcement also said Reaves had meth and amphetamine in her system at the time of the crash. Reaves’ 9-year-old son, seated in the second row directly behind the driver, died at the hospital following the crash. Her other son, seated in the second row behind the front passenger seat, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Tiffin man pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree theft after police say he stole and attempted to sell $60,000 worth of medical and construction equipment from the University of Iowa Health Care campus in North Liberty. 56-year-old Kevin Grimm was charged with first-degree theft and ongoing criminal conduct and was booked into the Johnson County Jail on June 3. Grimm had previously pleaded not guilty. According to court documents, Grimm used his position as a contractor to access and take medical and construction equipment over a several-month period while the hospital was being built. Grimm advertised the stolen equipment as “new” on websites including eBay and Facebook Marketplace, selling the items at a discounted rate. Court documents say he was still actively selling the stolen equipment at the time of his arrest. Some of the medical equipment Grimm is accused of stealing includes devices restricted by the Food and Drug Administration. Those devices are permitted only to doctors with a current national provider identification number, those directly supervised by a physician, or individuals with a prescription from a physician. Grimm’s sentencing is scheduled for June 1 at the Johnson County Courthouse. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
