The Iowa Corn Growers Association joined in this year’s National Corn Growers Association Corn Congress and wrapped up with several policy decisions finalized, and others sent back for additional review.

ICGA President Mark Mueller says one late development involved a newly announced review of fertilizer input tariffs, giving corn growers a narrow window to respond.

Mueller says national and state corn groups are now coordinating efforts to submit comments ahead of that deadline.

Delegates also revisited how the organization frames trade policy discussions. Rather than limiting language to tariffs, members agreed to broaden the terminology.

Mueller says the change provides additional flexibility as corn growers engage with federal policymakers on trade matters.

Another issue that had advanced earlier in the week, countervailing duties policy, was ultimately referred back to committee for further study.

Mueller says members agreed the complexity of countervailing duties warranted additional review before adopting a final position.

One measure that did move forward focuses on modernizing federal crop reporting data through improvements at the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Mueller says improved technology and data collection methods could help increase confidence in acreage and production estimates that significantly influence markets.

While not every proposal advanced without debate, Mueller says Corn Congress ultimately moved several priorities forward, and Iowa Corn will continue working with national leadership as those policies develop at the federal level.
