On Thursday at the Commodity Classic farm show in San Antonio Texas, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins provided an update on the U.S.-Mexico border which remains closed for the importation of cattle from Mexico. Feeder cattle from Mexico remain unable to cross the border into the U.S. due to the threat of New World Screwworm in Mexico and Rollins was asked at a press conference if the border will re-open soon.
Rollins says that until the sterile fly facilities, that are working to combat screwworm flies, are more productive the border will remain closed.
Beef prices remain high at the meat counter and grocery stores and the border closure has continued to depress the numbers of cattle in the U.S. herd. You can visit www.screwworm.gov for the latest information on the spread of NWS.
