As Iowa prepares to mark the nation’s 250th birthday, state agriculture leaders are encouraging farm families to take part in a long-standing tradition that honors generations of stewardship on the land. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is now accepting applications for the 2026 Century and Heritage Farm Program, recognizing farms owned by the same family for 100 and 150 years.
This year carries added meaning for the program. The Century Farm recognition was first launched during the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, and the Heritage Farm designation followed in 2006. Together, the programs have recognized more than 21,000 Century Farms and more than 2,000 Heritage Farms across Iowa. In 2026, the celebration will also connect with the America250 commemoration, highlighting agriculture’s role in shaping the country’s history.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig says the ceremony at the Iowa State Fair remains one of the most meaningful days of the year, bringing together multiple generations of farm families to celebrate their shared legacy.
Naig says tying this year’s celebration to America250 offers a chance to highlight how Iowa agriculture has helped shape the nation’s story across generations. Applications for the 2026 recognition must be submitted by June 1, with honored families gathering August 20 at the historic Livestock Pavilion during the Iowa State Fair.
