A woman is dead following a shooting in Cedar Falls Thursday night. At 7:28 p.m., the Black Hawk County Dispatch center received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 1029 Maplewood Drive, Apartment 8, in Cedar Falls. The caller reported that a fight occurred between acquaintances and that one person had been shot. Police and EMS responded and performed lifesaving measures, but the woman died from her injuries. Police have a 21-year-old male in custody.

 

A Linn County deputy was treated and released from the hospital after he risked his life while trying to stop a wrong way driver on Highway 100 in Cedar Rapids. At one point, the deputy got out of his squad and tried to flag the person down. The deputy later got back into his squad car, got ahead of the driver and collided head-on before the car could hit other motorists. The Sheriff’s Office says the driver could face charges for Operating While Intoxicated, as well as charges for driving the wrong way, from the Iowa Highway Patrol.

 

A survey shows a clear favorite among proposals to consolidate Cedar Rapids schools. The district is looking at three options to help solve a budget crisis. The most popular plan is the intermediate model, with 56 percent support. That shifts 5th and 6th grades to their own intermediate schools, while 7th and 8th grades are in middle schools. A plan to put 5th through 8th grades in middle schools got 34 percent support. The least popular option was switching to two high schools instead of three, with only 10 percent support. The Cedar Rapids School Board is scheduled to vote on its preferred plan on Monday.

 

Dozens of Iowans who live in mobile homes met at the Iowa Statehouse yesterday to support legislation aimed at keeping their homes safe and affordable. The residents say out of state companies that own the parks routinely raise lot rent so much that it makes it nearly impossible to afford to stay there, but it’s also too expensive to move their homes. Democrat State Senator Zach Wahls is co-sponsoring legislation that would require at least a 180-day notice for rent increases, new limits on rent increases, late fees, and utility charges, and increased civil penalties for manufactured home community owners that violate state law.

 

Governor Kim Reynolds announced a new bill she’s proposing that will tax products like hemp and vaping. The bill will also remove foods with added dyes in school lunches. It’s part of a bigger plan to reduce Iowa’s cancer rates. Doctors diagnosed more than 2,500 cases in 2022. Melanoma, lung cancer, and prostate cancer were some of the highest. The research looked at several different factors including smoking, obesity, and binge drinking.
