After a year-long investigation in Tama County, auditor Rob Sand found more than $250,000 in questionable spending. The county requested the investigation last year after it found an employee misused a credit card to avoid paying sales tax on a personal purchase. A year ago, the county fired Human Resources Administrator Tammy Wise. They say she used the county credit card to avoid paying sales tax on an $8,700 generator she bought for her own home. A Tama County Supervisor says they’ve already made changes to their policies to prevent this kind of situation from occurring again. Wise could face criminal charges in the case.
A driver who hit and killed a motorcyclist in 2023 will serve time in prison. A Linn County judge sentenced Debra Trimble to 16 years in prison for killing a motorcyclist. Officials say Trimble tried to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone, then hit a motorcycle operated by Chad Craig. Trimble took a plea agreement in December, the day before her trial was scheduled to begin.
A new crash report suggests alcohol may have contributed to a 6-year-old being struck by a vehicle outside a Dubuque Elementary School. According to the crash report, the child and her mother were crossing the street outside Audubon Elementary. A vehicle hit them both, running over the child and knocking the mother to the side. The child was taken to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The mother has minor injuries. No charges have been filed yet.
Domestic violence survivors in Iowa will now be eligible for free security cameras at their homes. Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced the new initiative with Amazon and domestic violence support groups. Amazon will donate Ring security cameras to domestic violence survivors. Amazon is donating 1,000 Ring cameras and $250,000 to the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence. All cameras will also come with a lifetime subscription, for free. The state is one of the first in the country to directly partner with Amazon.
