True Believers
Scott Rasmussen has conducted a new survey for Napolitan News on how registered voters view Jesus Christ. The responses were interesting at a variety of levels.
Overall, more than three-quarters of registered voters—78 percent—say that the man known to history as Jesus Christ actually existed and walked the earth. That’s down a point from last year. More Republicans than Democrats believe the statement…85 percent of Republicans are believers, compared with 74 percent of Democrats.
Interesting, however, that government employees are among the most skeptical about the existence of Jesus. More than a third—36 percent—say he did not exist, or are not sure.
Another hefty majority, 76 percent, say that Jesus Christ was the Son of God…more women than men believe this is true, with 80 percent of female registered voters holding the view, as opposed to only 72 percent of male registered voters.
Seventy-two percent of registered voters in this country say Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus Christ…that’s actually up four percentage points from last year.
A smaller number, but still a majority—62 percent—believe the main elements of the Christmas story, including the star of Bethlehem, angels appearing to shepherds, and the visit of the magi, all actually happening; that’s down two points from last year. Nearly a quarter of voters aren’t sure about the whole Christmas story.
And this is the area with the most disagreement, from a partisan standpoint—75 percent of Republicans believe those elements of the Christmas story are true, as opposed to a bare majority of Democrats, 55 percent.
So with so many on both sides sharing the same belief…maybe that’s a good starting point post-Christmas, in order for elected officials to do the work of the people.
