In the Spirit of the Season

No one had a winning ticket for the Powerball this past Wednesday. That means tomorrow’s jackpot will be an estimated $1.5 billion…just shy of the nearly $1.8 billion in September of this year, and not that far off the all time record of just over $2 billion.

If you took the money in a lump sum, that would be a nifty $686.5 million before taxes.

You may not play the Powerball for ethical reasons. Or because the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

Lately, I’ve heard some folks say they wouldn’t want to win because they don’t know what they’d do with all that money, and that it would be more trouble than it was worth.

In the spirit of the season, then, let me offer to take whatever amount you’re not comfortable with off your hands, should you win. It’s really the least I can do to support a loyal KXEL listener.

Yes, it would be a burden…what could you possibly do to dispose of that much money? So if you’re troubled about investing your $2 because of the chance you might win…I am here to help. Lop off whatever makes you uncomfortable, give it to me, and don’t think of it again.

And in reality, it’s not that much money. Not enough to buy the New York Yankees, which are worth more than $8 billion. The internet tells me that high-end superyachts go for more than a billion, so again…that’s out.

The internet also says that nationally, the average person spends $1,600 per month on rent. If you had a billion dollars, who could play  your rent for almost 51,000 years.

But again, don’t trouble yourself with all that. Go ahead and play the Powerball…when you win, just give me the extra. Again, in the spirit of the giving season, it’s the least I can do.
