MESKWAKI, Iowa (KCRG) – One of the two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in a Syria ambush Saturday has been identified as the son of Meskwaki Nation Police Chief Jeffrey Bunn. Chief Bunn shared the information in a post to the department’s Facebook page. “Our son Nate was one of the Soldiers that paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, to keep us all safer,” Chief Bunn wrote. Another soldier from Iowa was killed in the attack, while several other soldiers were injured. No other names have been released at this time. The Iowa National Guard is in the Middle East working on a broad counterterrorism operation.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened Saturday night on the city’s southwest side. Officers were called around 10 p.m. to the 800 block of 6th Street Southwest. CRPD says shots were fired between two groups of people after a verbal altercation. Police say one man was shot after he fired at a member of the other group. That man and an adult woman were found later, he was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At this point there is no information regarding detainments or arrests made in connection with the incident. Names are also being withheld as the investigation continues. Officers found evidence of gunfire and a bullet hole in the front door of a local business. People with more information are asked to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-272-7463.
CRAWFORD CO., Iowa (KCRG) – One person is dead after a crash in Crawford County on Saturday afternoon. Authorities said a teen driving a maroon Chevy Silverado was traveling south on Boyer Boulevard near Deloit around 1:15 p.m. 73-year-old Richard Healy from Vail, Iowa, was traveling north on Boyer Blvd. The teen was traveling behind a vehicle not involved in the crash and had poor visibility from snow and gravel. The teen driver and Healy collided. Healy was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.
LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – No one is injured after a machine shed caught fire in rural Linn County Sunday morning. First responders were called to a property on Linn Ridge Road around 8:10 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a machine shed was on fire. Tools and farm equipment were damaged, but no people were injured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
