TAMA COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Tama County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of scammers posing as deputies and demanding payment from victims. The sheriff’s office said in this scam, the scammer calls the victim posing as a Tama County deputy. Then the scammer demands payment of $22,000 for a supposed bail payment. Officials are reminding the public that no law enforcement agency will contact someone directly and demand money. Anyone who receives a phone call like this should hang up immediately. IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Marion man is facing multiple charges after Iowa City Police say showed a gun during an argument on the Ped Mall. 20-year-old Levi James Earl Heinzerling was arrested early Sunday morning. According to a criminal complaint, Heinzerling had gotten into an argument with a group of people when witnesses say he displayed a gun. Officers found a handgun in his waistband. Heinzerling has also admitted to drinking.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCCI/KCRG) – University of Iowa Health Care is expanding its life-support capabilities onboard its helicopters. University of Iowa Health Care has expanded its AirCare program to include helicopter transport for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) patients. It is the only hospital in Iowa to have an ECMO AirCare Team. The hospital says the expansion will boost its ability to save patients with severe heart and lung failure. It is designed to help move patients from referral hospitals to University of Iowa Health Care. The team will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can reach patients within a 170-mile radius of Iowa City. The ECMO AirCare Team became available starting on September 1.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Xavier Catholic Schools have selected a former Cedar Rapids Police officer to be the new Director of Safety and Transportation. Cory McGarvey, a former Cedar Rapids Police officer, has been named the new Director of Safety and Transportation for Xavier Catholic Schools. He has more than 30 years of public safety experience with the Cedar Rapids Police Department. He previously served as the School Resource Officer Supervisor, East District Police Lieutenant, and served on the Iowa Supreme Court’s Juvenile Justice Task Force to help create a diversion program that reduced recidivism rates. In these roles, McGarvey was responsible for supervising teams of officers, developing and improving emergency response plans, implementing Run-Hide-Fight training in Cedar Rapids schools, and managing investigations into school-related threats. McGarvey and his wife, who previously taught in the Xavier Catholic Schools system, also have two daughters who are graduates of the school system.
