From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
Two people are seriously hurt after their vehicle swerved off the I-380 bridge in Cedar Rapids yesterday afternoon near the intersection of I-380 and H Avenue northeast. Police say a vehicle tried to merge when a nearby car swerved to avoid contact. The swerving car hit a concrete barrier on the overpass, causing it to go off the road and fall. Two people went to the hospital. They are expected to survive. No one else was hurt.
A jury is expected to get instructions this morning, then start deliberating the fate of a man Linn County prosecutors say hired two men to kill Chris Bagley in 2018. In testimony, one of the men already convicted in Bagley’s killing says he overheard Andrew Shaw offer $10,000 to kill Bagley. The prosecutor said the weeks after Bagley was killed, Shaw forgave debt and gave extra drugs to the men who killed Bagley. Shaw’s defense attorney says the prosecution’s case is a house of cards, saying there is no proof Shaw orchestrated the killing. Closing arguments wrapped up yesterday afternoon.
Iowa Democrats are considering going rogue with the 2028 caucuses–but they want a show of hands first. The state party is leaving the decision to voters. Today, it launched a six-question survey, asking if Iowa should break party rules and go first. Last year, Democrats moved Iowa out of its traditional lead-off spot. It’s unclear if they’ll do that again in 2028. If Iowa does break party rules to go first, the DNC could refuse to seat Iowa’s delegates at the national convention. Any Iowan–Democrats, Republicans or Independents–can take the survey. It will be available at county Democrat party offices through November 15.
A new nonprofit pharmacy is helping to fill a need created when the First Avenue Hy-Vee closed in Cedar Rapids last year. The Eastern Iowa Health Center opened a new $1.5 million pharmacy that features robots that count and bottle up your prescription rather than pharmacists. The Center, on the corner of 4th Avenue and 12th Street, will also open an Urgent Care outlet on November 13 and plans to open a vision center nearby next year.
