New Food

There’s so much serious stuff in the world, and even close to home, that sometimes it’s good to unplug from it all and focus on what’s really important: namely, the new foods at next month’s Iowa State Fair.

There are, if you can believe it, 60 new foods premiering at the Iowa State Fair this year. Following review by invited judges, that was narrowed down yesterday to a top three who will compete among fairgoers for the coveted People’s Choice Best New Food award. (The news release called it “coveted”…it’s nothing like the KXEL Golden Cow Award, but I suppose it’s fine.)

Realistically, you might be able to partake of all three of these items, if you choose. In no particular order, there’s the Scotcheroo Shake…peanut butter and butterscotch ice cream swirled with gooey fudge and packed with chewy scotcheroo chunks. It’s topped with fluffy whipped cream, chocolate and caramel drizzle, and a full slice of scotcheroo on top.

Perhaps you’re looking for protein. There’s “Three Little Pigs”…oak-kissed smoked ham balls with a trio of flavors including honey and mustard-glaze, tangy cherry soda glaze, and vuttery vanilla glaze. Essentially, it’s a ham ball dressed up like a corn dog, or powdered sugar dough balls.

Finally, Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll…these are eggrolls wrapped by hand, filled with chicken, bacon, and white cheddar cheese, drizzled with ranch dressing.

Far be it from me to be a food snob, and while I understand the idea is to be intentionally outrageous to garner attention…put me down for a thick pork tenderloin and fresh squeezed lemonade. That’ll do.
