Human remains were found following a fire at a historic building in south-central Iowa. The Monroe County Sheriff says they found remains while fighting the fire at the R.O. Cramer building in Albia’s town square. The remains have not been identified. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

 

A 15-year-old faces charges in juvenile court in the shooting death of a Waterloo man earlier this month. Police say they believe the teen shot and killed A’ Tarion Key ‘Won De ‘Shawn Spates in the 1700 block of Mulberry Street. Police say several people had been shooting guns in this area. Police also found a woman had had been shot nearby on the same street. She survived. The 15-year-old now faces an involuntary manslaughter charge.

 

More than 30 employees at a custodial service company in Mount Vernon are losing their jobs. According to Iowa WARN, Southeast Services Corporation – Services for Education is laying off 31 employees. The layoffs are effective Monday, August 11.

 

A Winneshiek County K-9 is being credited with disarming a suspect–and bringing the gun back to deputies. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says it was called to Ranch Road for a welfare check on Jordan Schaller just before 2 Monday afternoon. Deputies say Schaller was carrying a 20 gauge shotgun, and walked toward the deputy. The deputy told him to drop the gun, but instead, deputies say Schaller fired several times into the ground. That’s when the K-9, named Drago, was released on Schaller. The dog bit the shotgun out of his hand, and brought the loaded gun back to deputies. Schaller now faces a number of charges, including Felony Assault on a Peace Officer and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon.

 

The Iowa State Fair has announced the three finalists for the Best New Food contest. Final foods include the Three Little Pigs–three ham balls with sweet and savory toppings; the Scotcheroo Shake–with scotcheroo ice cream, fudge, and a slice of scotcheroo on top; and the Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll–another dish from last year’s winner, who made a bacon cheeseburger eggroll. Fairgoers can vote on the winner between August 7-13 at the fair.
