A man living in Iowa who is originally from Burma (also known as Myanmar) was among eight immigrants the Trump Administration deported to South Sudan. A federal judge has said that flight violated a court order. According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE arrested Kyaw Mya in February. He is a registered sex offender in Iowa after he was convicted of Lascivious Acts with a Minor. Mya was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was paroled after four. According to DHS, he was given a final deportation order in 2022.
A former UNI student convicted of threatening to kill the University’s dean is avoiding jail time. Aisha Nyala was charged with multiple counts of stalking and harassment. Police say she used a fake Facebook profile to send threatening messages to the UNI dean, and later called the Iowa Board of Regents saying she would “shoot that woman in the head”. In a plea agreement, Nyala will spend a year in a residential correctional facility in Polk County and be on supervised probation for up to five years.
A truck smashed into a Cedar Rapids mobile home and now the man who lives there is without a place to stay. That home is near Johnson Avenue Northwest at the corner of 29th Street. Police say an older man in the barber shop parking lot across the street accidentally hit the gas pedal of his vehicle instead of the brake while in reverse. He then drove in reverse through a grassy lot and then hit the mobile home.
In a little over a month, Iowa police will start enforcing hands-free legislation making it illegal to hold your phone while driving. With the new law going into effect July 1, State Patrol Trooper Bob Conrad says Memorial Day weekend is the perfect opportunity for drivers to start practicing putting down their phones. He says good habits need to be practiced.
The Black Hawk Bridge will be closed through the holiday weekend. Last weekend, a sensor found one of the piers was moving and the bridge was deemed unsafe to use. Engineering teams are still working to find out what’s needed to fix the bridge. There is no date to reopen it. People crossing the Mississippi River will need to use the bridge between Marquette and Prairie du Chien.
