A bill reforming eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines will soon head to Governor Kim Reynolds for her signature. The Senate passed the bill late Monday night. It requires projects seeking eminent domain be used for the public’s benefit, and says carbon capture pipelines don’t meet this requirement. The issue divided Republicans for weeks and slowed down the session’s progress on other issues, including the state budget.
Another bill going to the governor’s desk would curb rules on fireworks. Iowa’s current law says fireworks are allowed from June 1 through July 8 and December 10 through January 3. But there are certain restrictions. If signed, this bill would keep local governments from banning or limiting the use of fireworks on July 3 and July 4 as well as on New Year’s Eve. The Iowa House passed the bill Monday.
Iowa’s newest representative was sworn in at the State Capitol in Des Moines yesterday morning. Voters elected Democrat Angel Ramirez last month. Ramirez is the first Latina to serve in the Iowa Legislature. She’s filling the Cedar Rapids area seat previously held by Sami Scheetz. He left to become a Linn County Supervisor.
Prosecutors have now charged a man with attempted murder for a shooting which sent someone to the hospital last week. Officers responded to reports of a shooting on May 4 in the 400 block of Rhomberg Avenue. Police say traffic cameras show four people assaulted a man before they got into a vehicle. The driver then pulled out a gun from under the hood, got back into the car and tracked down the victim before shooting him. Police say Domani Stephenson was the driver and pulled the trigger. The victim survived.
Voters have selected Center Point Urbana’s mascot “Stormin’ Norman” as the best high school mascot in the nation this year. It was part of the Sports Illustrated Best High School Mascot Competition. Stormin’ Norman made his debut in 2005. The CPU Mascot Coach says the national spotlight is a big deal for the two communities.
