A Tale of Two Easters
Today is Good Friday, meaning in two days it will be Resurrection Sunday, or Easter. The way this is being commemorated this year is quite different than last year at the White House.
Earlier this week, the White House hosted national faith leaders for an evening of prayer and a video message of President Trump was released, recognizing Holy Week and Easter Sunday. This is all being organized by the new White House Faith Office, as was yesterday’s staff worship service hosted by the President, including the Rev. Franklin Graham, Pastor Greg Laurie, and Pastor Jentezen Franklin. Students from Liberty University performed worship music.
By contract, last year, President Biden designated the date of Easter as Transgender Day of Visibility. The date last year, March 31, was coincidentally Easter while the “Transgender Day” is apparently always on March 31. But as I recall, the Easter proclamation got lost in the shuffle at the White House, not being issued until after backlash on Easter Sunday night…Easter was, essentially, forgotten…but Transgender Day was not.
Does this mark a different President Trump than before the first assassination attempt? Hard to imagine one would have gone through the experience in Butler, Pennsylvania and not be forever changed. And given the low bar set during the last Administration, we are certainly all noticing the change. Christians say this, plus specific mention of defending Christians in society in the proclamations, gives them hope for a societal revival of spirit and faith.
So with all the stories about people dying potatoes or marshmallows this year because eggs cost too much…it’s good to see the President honor with respect the true meaning of Easter—and it’s not candy or bunnies.
