Self-Driving Cars
We’ve all heard about these self-driving cars…basically, you just sit there and it does all the rest of the effort for you. This scares me more than a little bit, but far too many humans out there are paying even less attention to their driving, so I suppose you can give the automatic driver a chance.
I’ve never been close to one in person, but lately I’ve been taking the station SUV to various events…and that’s as close as I think I want to come.
I’ve had my personal car for about 10 years; someone else had it before that. Nothing at all wrong with it; pretty basic transportation, by design. When I’m driving, I don’t get to look at my car…so better that you spend a ton of money on fancy cars that I can see as I drive…instead of me spending money to impress you.
Yes, the car has a screen that I guess does navigation, although I turn that off. Apparently there’s a camera that shows up on the screen when I’m backing up, but I don’t trust it.
So imagine my surprise when driving the station vehicle the other night and the headlights came on automatically. That had happened before, so I wasn’t shocked…just mildly surprised. But when the headlights began alternating between high beam and low beam automatically based on what it sensed was ahead…that was interesting.
Not as interesting, though, as when it started to rain…and you guessed it…the front and rear windshield wipers came on, because apparently I’m incapable of handling that chore myself.
Then Friday, on the drive home, I actually saw a Tesla for the first time in real life. From what I gather, it saw me too, since they are apparently equipped with cameras.
Honestly, I was pretty happy to slide behind the wheel of my car once I got back from the trip…a car I operate, for good or bad.
