Pay the Tax Man

You’ve already probably gone through the pain of preparing your income taxes, and paying what you owe. And even if you got a refund, you likely are mad about the fact that the government had use of your money all year and are trying to figure out how to reduce the refund…since you would use that money more wisely than the government.

But since today is the deadline for filing that federal income tax return, we have a another reminder of how much we pay in taxes…and where it goes.

I have no idea if any of these DOGE efforts will make a difference; sort of pulling a drop of water out of the ocean. But it might, and we’ll certainly feel better about knowing there’s less waste—which is probably a bigger issue than fraud.

For so long, we’ve heard about the worst of government spending; various members of Congress have made their reputation on regular reports on this, dating back to the late Wisconsin Sen. William Proxmire and his “golden fleece award” for the most egregious fleecing of the American people that particular month.

But when was the last time we heard about government spending that was…well, worth it? When was the last time you heard about spending and said, “we got a good deal on that one”?

Some of the aggressive actions by the current administration to round up criminals and get them out of the country are leading many to say, “I don’t mind paying taxes for that.” But from an on-going standpoint, where are we getting value?

I’m sure we are; I just haven’t heard about it. And on this tax day…it might help if we could point to something of value. But with all the bloat, I’m afraid I don’t know what it would be.
