DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Governor Kim Reynolds has set the date for a special election to fill a seat in the Iowa House. The election will fill an open seat in District 78, which covers a large portion of the Cedar Rapids area. The District 78 seat was left vacant following the resignation of Representative Sami Scheetz, who became a member of the Linn County Board of Supervisors. On Tuesday, Governor Reynolds announced the date of the special election. It is set to take place on Tuesday, April 29.
MANCHESTER, Iowa (KCRG) – West Delaware Middle School entered lockdown Tuesday afternoon following a report of a possible external threat. Law enforcement were called to West Delaware Middle School at 2:58 p.m. after a student reported the threat. Shortly after police responded, the threat was resolved and the school’s lockdown was lifted. Officers identified the individual responsible, and are currently assessing next steps. There is no current threat to West Delaware staff and students.
CHARLES CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Charles City man was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm. In October 2024, Dashaune Burns-Johnson entered a plea of guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Earlier that year, Burns-Johnson brought drugs and a loaded firearm to a neighbor’s house in Charles City. While in the house, he took the firearm out of his bag and pointed it at someone else in the home. Burns-Johnson had previously been convicted of felony and misdemeanor crimes related to domestic abuse. There is no probability of parole.
WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa (KCRG) – Officials have identified the man who died after being hit by a vehicle on I-80 near Williamsburg on Thursday. The Iowa State Patrol reports 76-year-old Roger Evans, of Victor, died in the incident. A crash report says Evans was attempting to cross the westbound lanes to pick up items that had blown out of his vehicle at around 6 p.m. when he was hit by another vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
