The New Democrats

There’s a proposal to elevate two individuals to the top of the national Democrat fundraising effort. If approved, you’ll see these two as the face of the new Democrats, rallying to recover after the 2024 election defeats. In fact, these two even held a pitch meeting with the new chair of the Democratic National Committee to make their case in person.

You might be thinking I’m talking about Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. After all, they’ve been traveling the country together lately, speaking against the dangers of oligarchs running the U.S. government; so far, all that’s led to is people searching on their phones for what “oligarch” really means.

No, the two individuals who think they have the fresh approach to help the Democrat revival are none other than former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden. Multiple news outlets have reported that the Bidens have presented themselves as the answer, including with fundraising. No word on the official DNC response, but one could forgive them if the pop song, “Thank you, Next,” kept playing in their minds.

One long-time fundraiser told NBC that while there are plenty of Democrats obviously very frustrated with how things played out last year, there are plenty who still love Biden…however, “it’s time to move on with new leadership,” he said. That’s the most polite thing anyone said to the media in response.

A former Democrat aide told the New York Post, “Is this serious? I mean, it has to be a joke. This is an SNL skit.” That’s a less diplomatic response, but still kinder than a congressional Democrat source who told the Post that Biden should “stay in retirement with his pardoned family and keep his mouth shut.”

Snide folks on social media suggested that Biden needs the cash, since his previous sources of income have dried up.

But keep in mind that Democrats in Congress aren’t all that popular either; a CNN poll last week showed that just 29 percent of Americans view the party favorably. Granted, Republicans weren’t that much higher, but the Democrats are at their record low point in the 33 years of the poll.

They say that “everything old is new again”…but perhaps sometimes, it’s just old.
