Scoreboard Tells the Story
No, this is not about yesterday’s pro football game. But there is a similarity, I suppose. Those whose teams are hated by others often smile and point to the scoreboard, suggesting that winning is what matters.
So too with the Trump 2.0 Administration…and in this case, the “scoreboard” comes from numbers released yesterday by CBS News.
The CBS News/YouGov poll of more than 2,100 Americans was conducted between Wednesday and Friday of last week, and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.5 points.
A majority of those surveyed called the President “tough,” “energetic,” “focused,” and “effective” three weeks into his second term.
A full 70 percent of those surveyed said Trump was doing just what he promised in the campaign, and he has a 53 percent approval rating overall.
On specific issues, 59 percent approve of the Administration’s program to deport immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally. Even more–64 percent–approve of sending U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Those surveyed are virtually split on whether large detention centers should be used as officials determine if someone should be deported.
Overseas, 54 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, and this comes after his suggestion that the U.S. rebuild the Gaza Strip.
One spot of concern for the new President is that nearly two-thirds–66 percent–say not enough focus is being spent on lowering prices…but most did concede it would take at least six months for any actions to have an impact.
A majority say Elon Musk and DOGE should have at least some influence on government operations and spending…although as you might expect, Republicans are far more in favor of that than Democrats.
So while this game is early in the first quarter…Team Trump has to like the popular opinion scoreboard so far.
