DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – About 183,000 inactive voters, who have not participated in an Iowa election since 2020, have been removed from the state’s voter registration list. Secretary of State Paul Pate said it is part of his office’s effort to maintain clean voter lists, which he says is a core component of keeping Iowa elections safe and secure. “This process is critical in balancing voter integrity and voter participation: clean voter registration lists keep elections secure and accurate, and same day voter registration allows any eligible voter to register to vote at the polls, on Election Day, and cast a ballot,” Pate said. The process involves marking voters as “inactive” if they did not participate in the most recent Iowa general election. Their registration is then canceled if the voter does not vote in two consecutive general elections. Anyone removed should receive notice, as the state notifies Iowans about any change in registration status. Anyone with questions about their voter registration status can check, or update their status, at voterready.iowa.gov.
