IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Material that can be used for moving personal items, or transporting medical supplies are also used to keep cats safe and warm during the winter months in eastern Iowa. “We duct tape the top on them, we also do one more provisional duct tape just to keep it all together. Then my dad is the professional, the 85-year-old dad of mine, he goes and he cuts the holes for them to enter. You don’t do that on the ground, you do it halfway up so snow doesn’t get in as easily,” said Shelly Hull. Each year the family makes dozens of those shelters to give away for free at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. And each year many people take advantage of the opportunity to protect stray or lost cats around their homes. “A free-will donation is always welcome and appreciated, you know for the animals, but if not, please come get one to keep an animal warm. I also have them at my real estate office in my front vestibule, and those are free as well,” Hull said.
