More than 100 John Deere workers in eastern Iowa are being laid off. 112 people are losing their jobs at the John Deere Waterloo Works plant next month. This layoff is just the latest of several rounds, where hundreds of people have lost their jobs. To date, more than 950 people have been laid off from the Waterloo location. Deere and Company said, “To remain globally competitive, we must continue making workforce adjustments as needed to our manufacturing footprint.”
Opening statements are expected today in the trial of an Indiana man accused of a murder in Iowa City in what has been described as a case of “catfishing”. Jury selection wrapped up yesterday in the trial of Renard Winfield, Jr., of Gary, Indiana. He’s charged with the shooting death of Tommy Curry. Investigators say Curry was texting a person he thought was a woman. Instead, they say it was Winfield who met up with him 2021, which resulted in the shooting of Curry. Winfield faces first degree murder charges in the case.
Iowa’s Attorney General and Iowa’s Secretary of State say they filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration demanding voter data regarding the state’s voting audit last month. Brenna Bird and Paul Pate claim the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services refused Iowa’s requests for this information. Last month, Pate announced an audit of about 2,000 potential noncitizen voters around two weeks before Election Day. The federal government found 250 names on Iowa’s voter registry appeared to be noncitizens.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says a baby girl is now safe through Iowa’s Safe Haven Law. The girl was born on November 11 and placed in one of the state’s Safe Haven Baby Boxes. The boxes are designed for parents in crisis to drop off a child they cannot care for. The baby is now in the care and custody of HHS. This is the sixth child dropped off this year, and it brings the overall total to 72 since the law took effect more than two decades ago.
The former AMC movie theater in southwest Cedar Rapids is now up for auction. The theater on Edgewood Road Southwest closed during the pandemic and never reopened. According to the real estate website Loop Net, the current bid for the property is $250,000. The auction is open until this afternoon.
