Liver flukes are a growing problem for cattle producers

By Riley Smith Nov 20, 2024 | 4:50 PM

Previously only an issue for cattle producers in the wet regions of the Gulf and Pacific coasts, liver flukes have become a growing problem for producers across the country. David Shirbroun, professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, said liver flukes are hard to detect since many cattle don’t exhibit outward symptoms.

Shirbroun said the movement of cattle from the south has led to the spread of liver flukes.

As it is with many diseases and pests, Shirbroun said the best management tip for liver flukes is to do some diagnostic testing ahead of time in order to get ahead of any potential infections.
