Waterloo’s mayor is condemning those behind racist flyers posted around the city. Police could not say how many of these flyers have been found. They don’t believe there is an actual threat. In a statement, Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart says he is disturbed by the flyers. He says as a public servant who’s faced discrimination and threats, there’s no place for hate groups in Waterloo.
Two children were taken to University of Iowa Health Care after firefighters rescued them from an apartment fire in North Liberty. It happened just before 4:30 Monday morning in the 1000 block of Rachel Street. There was a report of a fire alarm, and smoke on the building’s second floor. The sprinkler system helped put out the fire. Firefighters also helped a dog get out of the apartment.
Dubuque Senior High’s head football coach faces first-degree theft-embezzlement charges. Darrell Moore is accused of misappropriating more than $47,000 from the now-dissolved Dubuque Independent Football League, and Dubuque Youth Football and Cheer. Records also show some of those funds may have gone into Moore’s Fan Duel account, store and on-line purchases, gas, golf, and hotel reservations.
Two teens involved in a stabbing at Iowa City West High School in August have taken a plea deal. Prosecutors say three teens chased down a victim in the hallway after the school was closed before punching, kicking, and stabbing the person multiple times. Moayed Elsid and Tion Exum-Carson were charged with third degree burglary and willful injury. Both teens have been placed on supervised probation for three years. Neither are West High students and were not allowed in the building.
Low-income families in Dubuque who get housing assistance may now qualify for more places to live. The city got federal approval to go from 110 percent to 120 percent of the fair market rate. The City says the extra 10 percent gives families more options to find a place to live, but also opens the door for more property owners to join the voucher program.
