More counties are putting burn bans in place due to continued dry weather. Iowa, Benton, Buchanan, Delaware, and Clayton counties in eastern Iowa now have outdoor burning restrictions. Nearby Winneshiek, Chickasaw, Poweshiek, Howard and Floyd counties are on the list, as well.

 

Developers of the proposed Cedar Rapids casino pitched their plans to the state racing and gaming commission for a $275 million project. Supporters of Cedar Crossing casino say the development will include restaurants and entertainment venues in one building. They told the state the casino will bring more than one million new tourists to the area, and generate $80 million in new gaming revenue for the state. The state commission will visit Cedar Rapids on November 20 to get a look at the proposed site. A final decision is expected in February 2025.

 

Mercy Medical Center is using new AI-driven technology to make breast cancer procedures more safe. AI programming at Mercy is being used to create a 3-D model of the tumor, helping prep surgeons in a variety of ways. Dr. Vincent Reid with Mercy says the model can help surgeons plan more and make key decisions on long and short-term treatments for patients.

 

Cornell College in Mount Vernon is offering free tuition for students who qualify for what’s called the “Iowa tuition grant.” The program is built off the state’s Iowa Tuition Grant, which is a need-based grant program that helps Iowans pay for college at private institutions. Students with a household income of less than $100,000 could be eligible to receive this particular financial aid. It could help pay for college for one out of ten Cornell students.

 

Former Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark has been named WNBA Rookie of the Year in a near-unanimous vote. A national panel of sportswriters and sportscasters gave Clark 66 of 67 votes, with the last vote going to Chicago Sky player Angel Reese. Clark led the Indiana Fever to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
