The Des Moines Register reports the owner of eastern Iowa’s Duane Arnold nuclear power plant is weighing whether to bring the facility back online. Its owner, NextEra, shut down the plant four years ago saying it wasn’t economically viable anymore. Now, the plant could be worth restarting if a large tech company or data center chooses to buy power from it. The newspaper reports it’s unclear how much work would be needed to reopen the plant. NextEra would need to rebuild Duane Arnold’s cooling towers.

 

Officials with the Linn-Mar Community School District say it’s partnering with law enforcement to investigate an incident that happened during Wednesday night’s homecoming parade. School officials say students with the student-led Gay-Straight Alliance group called “Spectrum” were harassed and had objects thrown at them. The District says it is dedicated to ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and valued and will not condone actions that threaten them.”

 

The Iowa City cycling community is gathering tonight for a memorial to honor Ashlee Hopkins. Bike Iowa says she was taken off life support systems after a car hit her while she was on a bike ride. Hopkins worked for the Domestic Violence Intervention Program. The memorial is being held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gay and Chia funeral home.

 

Dubuque’s popular Comiskey Park is to get more than $4 million in upgrades over the next few years. The latest money to help pay for it is a nearly $2 million federal grant. The first phase included a splash pad, playground, and a basketball court. The second phase will be more basketball courts, picnic areas, trails, and added green spaces.

 

Cedar Rapids will host the 2025, 2026, and 2027 National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II Volleyball Championships. It will be four-day national tournament at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids in November of each of those years. Kirkwood Community College will help host the event.
