Voters agreed to what’s called a PPEL vote in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy renews funds for infrastructure and maintenance in the district for the next decade. With 56 of 59 precincts reporting, more than 72% of voters agreed to the levy. This will not increase property tax rates, but will keep it at $1.34 for every $1,000 of taxable property.

 

The presidential debate is over, and now it is 55 days until the election. Vice President Kamala Harris is heading to North Carolina today after debating Donald Trump in Philadelphia last night. There are no scheduled events for Donald Trump today, but the former President is to hold a rally in Arizona tomorrow.

 

The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to rule by Midnight tonight whether three Libertarian Congressional candidates can be on the November ballot. A state objection panel removed three candidates–including First District candidate Nicholas Gluba–from the ballot. He’s challenging Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat Christiana Bohannon. The objections against these candidates were filed by voters involved in Republican politics. Attorneys for the Libertarian Party say they had no right to file an objection to get them kicked off because they’re not Libertarians and weren’t harmed by the party’s error.

 

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is in India for a trade mission, leaving from Des Moines yesterday. The Governor’s office says the purpose of the 10-day mission is to work toward strengthening trade and investment relationships. Reynolds will meet with Indian government officials and American business leaders during stops in Delhi and Mumbai.

 

Two people are recovering today after an early morning fire yesterday in Cedar Rapids. The fire broke out inside a multi-residential home on Park Court Southeast, near Redmond Park. It was contained to one unit.

 

1,100 flags representing the number of college students who die by suicide every year were on display at Kirkwood Community College’s Coralville campus yesterday. Students are raising awareness about suicide prevention. One student says she often has to remind her own friends to seek help when needed. The flag will also be on display at the Cedar Rapids campus tomorrow.
