IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Police are investigating a stabbing near the University of Iowa’s campus in Iowa City. A Hawk Alert from the university said officers responded to the area of South Gilbert Street and East Burlington Street on Wednesday night. The first alert had asked people to avoid the area. But in an update, it said to resume normal activity and stay aware of your surroundings. Police have not released any information about any possible arrests or injuries.

DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) – Don’t expect an announcement in the next few days from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds on which person will become the state’s new lieutenant governor. Adam Gregg — who served as lieutenant governor since Reynolds became governor seven years ago — announced Tuesday that he was resigning immediately to become the new president and CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association, an organization that lobbies on behalf of banks. When will Iowa have a lieutenant governor again? Governor Reynolds is scheduled to leave next Tuesday for a 10-day trade mission to India. An announcement about her “number two” would seem like an unlikely one to make while on an overseas trip. On Wednesday, the governor was asked if Iowans could expect an announcement before she leaves for that trip. The governor responded, “Oh, no, that’s too fast.” She added, “I want to make sure that I take the time and get the right person there.” Governor Reynolds didn’t provide additional details on a timeline. Does the governor already have a short list of potential candidates for the state’s second-highest position? “We have a couple people in mind,” she said without naming names.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KCRG) – Davenport police have arrested 2 West High School students for possession of firearms on school grounds. Wednesday morning, Davenport Police arrived at Davenport West High School to serve a search warrant on two students related to an ongoing investigation. The Davenport Police Department worked closely with Davenport Community School District leadership and West High School administration to ensure the safety of students and staff. The school day continued without interruption. The investigation remains ongoing; no further information is available at this time.

NORA SPRINGS, Iowa (KCRG) – A woman was killed early Wednesday morning after her vehicle hit a bridge pillar and caught fire in north central Iowa. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, a 2022 Kia Telluride was traveling eastbound on U.S. 18 near Nora Springs when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the median. The vehicle hit a bridge pillar and caught on fire. First responders found the woman dead inside the vehicle. She was the only occupant. The crash is under investigation.
