DES MOINES, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) – Summit Carbon Solutions is facing a setback in its proposed CO2 pipeline project, as the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled in favor of landowners who sued to keep Summit from surveying their land. It’s a reversal of a lower court decision, with the state’s high court now claiming it’s premature to categorize Summit as a ‘common carrier’ for public utility. It’s something Summit needs to be able to prove before it can use eminent domain. Summit can’t start building its pipelines in Iowa until it gets approval in North and South Dakota. The Sierra Club Iowa Chapter calls the decision a victory for landowners. Even though the Iowa Utilities Commission isn’t taking up the club’s reconsideration request, the club is moving forward with its plan to take the fight to court. A similar court case is already on the books in Iowa, with Iowa’s highest court set to hear oral arguments October 8 at the state capitol. Iowa’s News Now did reach out to Summit for comment didn’t hear back.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids police are investigating a shooting that took place Saturday night around 11:13 p.m. in the 800 block of 3rd Ave SW. Officers responded to multiple calls about gunfire between the occupants of two vehicles. When they arrived, they found evidence of the shooting and an occupant of a nearby home who had suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the foot. The individual was not believed to be involved in the shooting. Officers also found two vehicles and three homes that were hit by the gunfire. It was also discovered that a gas pipe had been struck, and the Cedar Rapids Fire Department was called to the scene to shut off the gas line.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) – The owner of the Lighthouse Inn Supper Club says several items that survived a fire there have since been stolen. The restaurant’s owner tells Iowa’s News Now they have been unable to recover anything from the scene because their insurance provider is still doing an investigation of the fire. An official cause has not been found or made public, but an initial investigation did not find anything suspicious. Among the items taken from the scene is a real ship’s wheel that hung on the wall. The Lighthouse was destroyed the morning of August 14.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) –  Cedar Rapids Police were called to a fight between several individuals in the 200 block of 3rd Avenue SE around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Police tell Iowa’s News Now they took several calls, leading first responders to treat some victims on the scene. Police say those witnesses were not cooperative and officers were unable to make any arrests. The block has a history of problems with fighting near or after bar closing times. Police stepped up surveillance of the area earlier this year and establishments agreed to cut back their hours in hopes of preventing further fights. The measures appeared to have worked for a while.
