Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, with Iowa Democrats praising the move and Republicans criticizing the selection. Iowa Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, said Walz moves the ticket further to the left. And in a statement, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart says Walz is “a great candidate for Vice President because he understands Midwest principles.” It is now 89 days until the November elections.

 

Dubuque school bus drivers have approved a three-year contract after picketing for higher wages and better working conditions. Next week, the School Board is expected to approve the new contract after union members approved it last week.

 

Cedar Rapids Police say a woman led officers on a high speed chase before crashing her vehicle with four children inside. Kayla Markell faces several charges including eluding while speeding, child endangerment, credit card fraud and theft. Court documents say she stole someone’s purse and used a credit card at a Walmart last Thursday. She drove off when officers tried to pull her over Monday. Court documents say she drove at speeds over 100 miles an hour and weaved in and out of traffic before crashing on Kirkwood Boulevard Southwest near Prairie High School. All of the children inside the car are under the age of ten. It’s not clear if they were hurt.

 

An official application has been submitted for a casino in Cedar Rapids. The Linn County Gaming Association and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment jointly submitted the application Friday. The application will be presented to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on October 3 at its meeting in Bettendorf. A final decision on the application is expected to come in February.

 

Dubuque Police have issued a scam alert. It’s a text scam that claims to be from the U.S. Postal Service. The scammer claims that you have a USPS parcel that needs to be cleared through customs but you need to click on a link. Police say don’t click on anything or give personal information to anyone who cold calls or texts you.
