Iowa Politics with Jeff Stein — Tue. Aug. 06, 2024

From The Mailbag
Occasionally, I’ll share some interesting notes or stories I get via email. Today, some items from the email…but with a twist.
The items I’m sharing today are from three emails I got right in a row the other day.
The first noted that workers in Iowa are 23 percent less likely to quit their jobs compared with workers in other states. That makes Iowa the so-called fifth happiest state for workers in America. The study analyzed online search data for a list of key terms, such as ‘how to quit my job’ and ‘resignation letter template’, to identify the states ready to hand in their notice this year.  Hawaii is the state with the most unhappy workers…apparently the job gets in the way of surfing.
Square that with the next email…saying Iowa is among the states where people are unhappiest with their jobs. This is measured by people actually quitting their jobs during a one-month sample period this past spring. Iowa was ninth unhappiest. Alaska was first…something about those two newest states, apparently.
This particular metric came from reviewing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the rate of workers quitting their jobs per month in each state. Apparently 2.3 percent of the whole Iowa workforce quit in March.
I said there were three emails…the last one in that trio, that all came right in a row…was from my employer, congratulating me on a work anniversary with KXEL and NRG Media.
Not sure what to make of any of that…but too much there for it to be a coincidence, right?
