Police officers arrested an Anamosa gym teacher about a decade after he was accused of sending inappropriate messages to a female student. 50-year-old Wayne LaSack faces one count of sexual exploitation of a minor. There was an investigation into the 2014 incident four years later, but the principal believed the accusation by the 15-year-old girl was unfounded after LaSack denied the conversation and implied his now ex-wife sent the messages. The complaint says screenshots of the messages surfaced again this year along with additional information. Police interviewed LaSack, his ex-wife and the now former student, resulting in the arrest and new charges.
2,900 members of the Iowa National Guard are doing their annual summer training at Camp Ripley in Minnesota. This year’s training is more intense than in years prior. Soldiers from Iowa are deep in the woods of central Minnesota acting out real-life scenarios. Brigadier Gen. Derek Adams says the Guard members will face a well trained opposing force which he says will better train Iowa’s force.
Linn County and Cedar Rapids are taking new steps tackle on-the-street homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. The number of people sleeping outside or in a vehicle has quadrupled in Linn County since 2017, according to Willis Dady Homeless Services and Waypoint. J’nae Peterman has recently been hired as Homelessness Systems Manager to help address the increasing unsheltered homeless population in the community.
RAGBRAI is entering eastern Iowa. Thousands of bike riders are leaving Knoxville to travel to Ottumwa. It’s a 62 mile route where the riders will face a 2,500 foot climb. They’ll leave Ottumwa tomorrow morning for Mt. Pleasant, with riders dipping their tires into the Mississippi River in Burlington Saturday. The 51st Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa started Sunday in Glenwood on the Missouri River and is billed as the oldest, largest, and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world.
