Convention Review

The Republican National Convention concluded last Thursday night. Plenty of opinions have been tossed around all weekend, as is usual…enhanced by news of the change in the Democrat ticket.

We’ll have our own GOP convention review next Monday, another in the “Iowa Talking Points” series of programs. You can be part of the live studio audience one week from today, Monday, July 29th, at 3 p.m. at Studio5@Mudd Advertising in Cedar Falls. Seating is limited, but you can reserve your free tickets now at iowatalkingpoints.com. We’ll hear from experienced political operatives, and from those who were in Milwaukee. And we’ll do the same thing after the Democrats hold their convention in Chicago next month.

Given the time and length of President Trump’s acceptance speech last Thursday, you may have missed what I think was a very strong few closing paragraphs. They read as follows:

“You have been told to lower your expectations and to accept less for your families.

“I am here tonight with the opposite message: Your expectations are not big enough. They’re not big enough. It is time to start expecting and demanding the best leadership in the world, leadership that is bold, dynamic, relentless and fearless. We can do that.

“We are Americans. Ambition is our heritage. Greatness is our birthright.

“But as long as our energies are spent fighting each other, our destiny will remain out of reach. And that’s not acceptable. We must instead take that energy and use it to realize our country’s true potential—and write our own thrilling chapter of the American story. We can do it together. We will unite. We are going to come together and success will bring us together.”

The words alone could have belonged to a nominee of either party. In fact, they should belong to the nominees of both parties. How well a candidate puts those words into actual practice is the difference between winning and losing an election, yes…but between being a caretaker and a leader.
