Both of the Democrat candidates for U-S House in eastern Iowa are now calling on President Biden to step down. Rep. Ashley Hinson’s opponent, Sarah Corkery, told KCCI she agrees with Christina Bohannan, the challenger to Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. In a statement, Bohannan says, “Over the past couple of weeks, people all across Iowa have shared with me their grave concerns about President Biden; that it seems he is not up to the task of a strong, vibrant campaign that will provide a compelling vision for our future.”

The man who shot and killed an Algona police officer last September will spend the rest of his life behind bars. A jury found Kyle Ricke guilty of first degree murder in the death of Officer Kevin Cram. He was a 10-year veteran of the force and served with the Algona Police Department since 2015. Ricke shot Cram while he was trying to serve Ricke with an arrest warrant. Ricke’s mother testified this week in the trial against her son, saying she saw him pull the trigger. A first degree murder conviction in Iowa means life in prison with no chance of parole.

Seven months since a school gunman killed a student and a principal at an Iowa high school, state leaders say cost and regulations are getting in the way of securing Iowa’s schools. That was the focus of the School Safety Task Force, which met for the first time yesterday. Some of the suggestions include installing new locks, ballistic glass, and key card scanners in schools and classrooms statewide, but several school officials said this is not financially realistic, especially for smaller districts. The task force has other meetings scheduled for August and September. Once the recommendations are finalized, they’ll be sent to legislators who will determine which ones are adopted.

The Mississippi River in Dubuque is starting to go down after cresting at over 20.5 feet on Tuesday. The river is now down about a foot from the crest, but still at moderate flood stage. The river is also falling in Bellevue, and is expected to be back in its banks by next Thursday.
