A Cedar Rapids man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his neighbor almost two decades ago. A Linn County judge found Curtis Padgett guilty of first degree murder in May. Padgett beat and stabbed Dennis First to death in 2007. Investigators found First’s body inside his apartment at the Hawthorne Hills Apartments on C Street Southwest. But Padgett wasn’t charged until last year. In the courtroom, Padgett called First his best friend and denied killing him. Padgett’s attorney says they plan to appeal his conviction.

The two people killed in a crash Sunday in Bertram were circuit pastors who had gone out to lunch before the fatal crash. Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids says Chuck Layton and Carol Mart died after investigators say they didn’t yield at the intersection of Blaine’s Crossing Road and Highway 13 about one Sunday afternoon. They hit another vehicle. Layton and Mart died at the scene. The other driver was not hurt.

The long running Olivet Neighborhood Mission in Cedar Rapids is closing. The church where it operates says that’s because there’s too much need for it to handle. A church Pastor says the mission’s current location will close effective August 31. The closure will not impact Head Start Day Care during this upcoming school year. That’s according to the CEO of HACAP which oversees Head Start Programs in the region.

The Iowa Hunger Coalition is collecting signatures in a petition calling on Governor Kim Reynolds to participate in the Summer EBT program next year. Reynolds declined to participate in the federal program this year and instead announced competitive grants for summer feeding sites in local communities. The Iowa Hunger Coalition says it plans to submit the petition in ahead of an August 15 deadline for the state to file plans with the USDA.

The Iowa State Fair has released its list of 84 new foods for you to try this year. The new foods include Deep Fried Bubble Gum, Hot Cheeto Float, Funnel Cake Burger, Lobster Corn Dog, Ragin’ Raspberry Ravioli, Strawberries and Cream Waffle on a Stick, and Walking Frito Pies. The Iowa State Fair starts in about a month on August 8 and runs through August 18.
