MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – Thursday afternoon, emergency crews responded to Lucore Rd at the Indian Creek Bridge, just north of Brookside Dr. for a report of a motorcycle versus SUV collision. Investigators say a motorcycle was traveling northbound and crossed the centerline striking a GMC Acadia traveling southbound. The operator of the motorcycle was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Officials say the operator was wearing a helmet at the time. The roadway, which was closed following the incident, since reopened.

TAYLOR COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – At approximately 3:19 a.m. on July 4, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bootleggers Bar and Grill for a report of a shooting. Responders arrived to find a victim, later identified as 19-year-old Colby Nelson, lying unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head. He was declared dead at the scene. A man identified as 37-year-old Alan Schultz was located standing against an SUV near the body. Officials asked Schultz if he was the shooter and Schultz confirmed that he was. Eyewitnesses also identified Schultz as the shooter. He was detained by police. According to investigators, Schultz and Nelson had a disagreement in the bar earlier in the night, and later again when Schultz went to leave. Schultz left the bar on his motorcycle and went to his residence where he grabbed a loaded handgun and drove back to the bar in a different vehicle. Schultz then confronted Nelson at a truck parked in front of the bar, before pointing the gun at Nelson and firing one round in his face. Schultz then unloaded the gun, placed it on the ground, and waited for deputies to arrive. Schultz was charged with Murder in the First Degree.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – In an effort to curb drunk driving, the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau has partnered with ridesharing company Uber to offer a $10 voucher to anyone who needs a ride home. Numerous traffic deaths have occurred on the 4th of July on Iowa roads over the years. Troopers will look for distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence. The voucher is valid from July 3-7.

BELLE PLAINE, Iowa (KCRG) – One of the biggest Independence Day events in Belle Plaine is parked in a new location. The Belle Plaine Car show is at Franklin Park instead of downtown this year. Some 80 car lovers are showing off their vehicles everything from classic roadsters to modern sports cars. There are a couple of motorcycles on display as well. One of the organizers said the new location really made a difference. “It was actually getting kind of crowded up there on Main Street,” said Sara Johnson, a member of the Belle Plaine Community Development Board. “We thought if we moved down here, they could spread out a little bit more.”
