Now That Was A Good Time

Around 200 of you came to the National Cattle Congress grounds this past Saturday for our third annual summertime picnic, now called IowaFest. And what a great time we had.

I apologize that I could not spend more time talking individually with you folks; that bothers me every year, and maybe we can improve on that if we do the event again in the future.

You were very attentive and engaged with Secretary of State Paul Pate, and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig; and with the three state representatives, one state senator, one perhaps-future state senator, and one county supervisor who were all on hand.

You purchased the new KXEL coffee mug, with every cent of the purchase price going to the Friends of the National Cattle Congress for their planned renovations; mugs are available at the KXEL Waterloo studio, and the National Cattle Congress office.

And then there was Todd Starnes. They sent along the normal number of books that are sold with a crowd of this size; you snapped up all of those, and another 40 or so of you placed orders on site to be mailed out this week. You showed him what Iowa hospitality was like and he commented several times during his four-day stay with us how great the KXEL audience was to him. A dozen of you called in to his national show last Friday, which came from our studios and aired at a special time.

Oh, and I introduced him to a breaded pork tenderloin the first night he was here…before long, before we went for lunch or dinner, he wanted to know how the tenderloins were at whatever place we were going.

Feel free to share the photos you took with me by email, jeff@kxel.com, or post them online and use the hashtag KXEL.  I’d love to see them.

Sincere thanks, then, to all of you who attended. I’d love to hear your thoughts about if we should do it again, and if so, what changes we should make. And if you could not make it, we’re hoping to share some of the on-stage conversations here on the radio in coming days.

Handshakes, conversations, photos and great Iowa picnic food…not a bad way to spend a Saturday in June.
